Organic Farming Training Program
The Children of Armenia Fund (COAF) that has been implementing Comprehensive Rural Development Program in Armavir Marz of Armenia since 2004, has recently initiated an Organic Farming Training Program, aimed at encouraging the high school students living in rural communities of the country to specialize in farming and multi-pronged agricultural projects through application of innovative methods and acquisition of practical skills and mechanisms. On June 19, 2011 five members of the Agricultural Clubs from COAF-supported communities of Dalarik, Karakert, Lernagog and Miasnikian left for the United States of America to take part in the eight-week pilot program, which will enable the youngsters to be trained on organic farming in the premises of “Ararat Farms” located in the State of Maine. In addition to the primary goal of the project, the trainees will also strengthen their English language skills and attend a series of social projects and cultural events.
The Agricultural Clubs had been launched as part of the grant provided to COAF by the HSBC Global Education Fund and have been operating in the mentioned villages since 2008. Prior to their departure, the young farmers completed English classes through the support of the Peace Corps, and conducted a number of instructive visits to the fields, gardens and farms of Armavir Marz.
Following the completion of the Organic Farming Training Program in the USA, the trained girls and boys will transfer the newly gained knowledge and skills to their fellow classmates and community members. Another expected contribution of the project focuses on the development of children’s professional orientation, which is often lacked in Armenian educational institutions. Anna Mkrtchyan, who is a high-school student in the Dalarik School, is excited about the program and wishes to unite with the members of their team and establish an advanced center of ecological agriculture in Armenia, upon return from the States.

An Introduction To The Organic Farming Methods
Organic farming methods are techniques by which farmers make use of to produce crops that are good for the body while having little effect on the environment. These techniques mix scientific knowledge, technology, as well as traditional means of farming in order to maintain a sustainable agricultural discipline that is good for both the people and the environment. Here are several organic methods that are employed in order to fulfill the objectives of this alternative agricultural method given by one of the florists who also delt with compost and flower delivery .
One of the basic organic farming methods that are utilized is crop diversity. It refers to the process of planting different crops within a single farming lot with the goal of making the soil healthier. This is unlike conventional farming wherein a single crop is planted on a farming lot. Crop diversity results in to the attraction of beneficial insects as well as helpful soil microorganisms, which can protect the crops and develop the soil.
Another important aspect in organic farming methods is sustaining plant nutrition without using chemical fertilizers. Organic farmers utilize crop rotation in order to maintain the fertility of the land so that the alternating plants will not deplete the nutrients in the soil. Green manure crops are also utilized on the soil as a provider of nitrogen, because it is a crucial nutrient for plant growth. Animal manure obtained from livestock is can be also utilized as a form of organic fertilizer.
Pest control and weed management also plays a huge part in organic farming methods. Organic farmers do not use pesticides and herbicides which have huge long-term effects on the environment as well as on the health of the people who are going to consume the crops. Therefore organic farmers have to accept the fact that they have to handle a certain level of pest damage. However, they also have ways of dealing with pests and weeds. For example, they add beneficial insects which eats pests like ladybugs, parasitoid bugs, predatory mites, big-eyed bugs, lacewings, praying mantis, and minute pirate bugs. Regarding weeds, organic farmers utilize mechanical means on the land and some examples are cultivation, tillage, mowing and cutting, flame weeding and thermal weeding, and mulching.
