Lawyers scolded...Stocks gain...Pharmacists warned

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Prosecutors and defense lawyers at the Casey Anthony trial have been given a scolding today by the judge -- who then recessed the trial until tomorrow. The judge wants them to use that time to sort out issues involving witnesses. The judge today accused both sides of "gamesmanship" -- and warned that they may face punishment when the trial is over. Anthony is accused of killing her 2-year-old daughter.

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks are finishing the day broadly higher. Investors have put aside their concerns about the Greek financial crisis, as the market shakes off its longest weekly losing streak in nearly a decade.

TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — Astronaut Mark Kelly says a weekend visit home to Tucson was good medicine for his wife, Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. He tells a newspaper (the Arizona Daily Star) that he and Giffords got Mexican takeout Friday night, and on Saturday went for a ride in downtown Tucson. Later that day, he says, Giffords had a reunion with her staff -- including an emotional meeting with Ron Barber, who was also injured in the January shooting that killed six people. Giffords is now back in Houston, continuing outpatient rehabilitation therapy.

YAPHANK, N.Y. (AP) — The gunman who shot and killed four people during a pharmacy store robbery in a suburban New York community is believed to be a drug user who police consider armed and dangerous. The county police commissioner told reporters today that police are warning the others of small pharmacies around Long Island to be cautious of anyone inquiring about getting painkillers. He also said extra police patrols would be deployed near those businesses.

Scott's mind on drugs – Orlando Opinionators – Orlando Sentinel

Hopefully, Gov. Rick Scott’s decision late last week to suspend his ridiculous order requiring random drug tests of all state employees will be followed by the U.S. District Court in Miami ruling the drug tests illegal.

Scott shelved his order in the wake of a lawsuit filed by the ACLU, which claimed the Constitution protects citizens from such widespread drug testing. Scott wrote that while “the case is pending, it does not make sense for all agencies to move forward with the logistical issues involved in instituting the new policy.”

But  it never made sense for Scott to institute blanket drug testing. For public employees who operate rail lines, who care for the infirm, OK. Drug testing makes sense. But why potentially test everyone else?

Fortunately, the federal courts haven’t found compelling reasons. And hopefully, the court in Miami won’t either.

Perhaps Scott thought drug testing government employees would play well with some of his anti-government supporters.

But that’s no reason — not one that will pass any legal test – is it, governor?

@America: I’m no lawyer, so I can’t argue the ‘rights’ thing, but I do know that the state of the art on drug testing is nowhere near as good as you think it is. People with kidney disease and diabetes test positive for cocaine, because of the chemical imbalances in their bodies. People taking allery drugs like Dimetapp test positive for amphetamines. People taking ampicillin and amoxicillin (types of penicillin) test positive for heroin. And false positives also occur with labs that don’t follow protocols to store and label samples. But it’s more important to haters like you to make sure some guy filling potholes in a road gets canned than it is to test based on need to protect public safety. That which you do to others, may it be done 1 billion times to you, hatehead.

America, your question, quite simply, is stupid and predicated on many falsehoods. Here is one for you-what % would have to get ‘caught’ at what cost for it to be ‘worth it’?

You are aware that such measures are unconstitutional anyway, correct? It’s like asking ‘how many people do you want to be raped today’ as you propose mandatory instant death for any and all accused rapists.

Scott and his near brain dead followers like to say that no state money should be given to druggies. This is supposed to justify what they are doing, along with the drug testing of welfare recipients.
