Canon Reginald Fuller

After his ordination Fuller studied at the Angelicum and Biblicum in Rome, obtaining licentiates in Theology (1933) and Sacred Scripture (1934) and a doctorate in Theology in 1935. The following year he began teaching at the seminary of St Edmund’s, Ware, as Professor of Sacred Scripture . In 1949 he took up his first pastoral appointment, as assistant priest at Our Lady of Victories, Kensington, and from 1950 to 1963 served as parish priest at Our Lady of the Assumption and St Gregory, Warwick Street.

During his time at Cambridge he met Leonard Cheshire, who had converted to Roman Catholicism. Their friendship lasted until the war hero’s death in 1992, and Fuller later edited Crossing the Finishing Line — Last Thoughts of Leonard Cheshire VC (1998), an examination of his friend’s faith during his battle with motor neurone disease.

Austere with himself, Fr Fuller was quietly generous to others, contributing to many charities and particularly to individuals of various nationalities who came to him for help. He never failed to offer his visitors a glass of wine or whisky, seizing the opportunity to pour himself a large one with hot water — his “medicine”. He had a self-deprecating sense of humour, although there was no chance of winning if he were on the opposing side in a game of Trivial Pursuit.

Although always modest about his accomplishments, Fuller loved to pass on his knowledge . From 1968 to 1972 he lectured in biblical studies to trainee teachers at St Mary’s College, Strawberry Hill. He was then sent to Africa and from 1972 to 1975 lectured on the Old Testament at Nairobi University in Kenya. While there he travelled widely and he later enjoyed describing his visits to the Serengeti, Victoria Falls, the Great Rift Valley and Mounts Kenya and Kilimanjaro.

On return from Africa he was appointed a chaplain at Westminster Cathedral, where he remained until becoming, in 1978, parish priest of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Islington. In 1983 he retired to the Church of St Mellitus, Tollington Park, continuing to write and assisting in the parish. On one occasion he was attacked by a trio of thugs intent on robbing the church. Though beaten unconscious, he afterwards made light of what must have been a horrifying experience.

From 1990 to 1994 Fuller lived at the parish church of Our Lady and St Joseph, Poplar, where he helped out with daily Masses while continuing with his writing and other interests.
