Young refugee completes his first year in a US school
ABOUT THIS SERIES The Democrat and Chronicle spent the 2010-11 school year following the progress of one refugee student at The Children's School of Rochester. During hours of classroom visits and interviews throughout the year, a reporter and photographer documented his year of learning.
SUNDAY For one refugee student, starting at school brings plenty of challenges.
MONDAY Teachers look for ways to help Jackson succeed in the classroom.
TODAY School puts emphasis on community, family involvement.
Adult refugees to the United States must take English language classes and vocational training to receive social services. So principal Jay Piper sets up a program for parents to meet those requirements right at School 15, also known as The Children's School.
Piper knows that any student's success starts well before arriving in the classroom. A child's past, home life and parents' involvement can all influence whether they do well. And success can be even more elusive for the city's refugee children. Along with the obvious language barriers, some have never attended school. Many live in the city's worst neighborhoods, those plagued by poverty, crime and violence. I am.
You are.
He is. She is. It is.
Jackson's father, Pascal Hakizimana, moves his lips to repeat the words, but no sound comes out. When the teacher asks the class to copy sentences from a workbook, Hakizimana holds his pencil to the paper as if he understands the instruction, but writes nothing. He looks for help from a classmate; an Afghan man whose English is somewhat better, but still spotty. The two men smile nervously as they stare at each other, lacking the language to express their thoughts. They laugh as words fail them. 'Irrevocable changes'
All of these efforts to build community, however, face a threat midway through the semester when the district comes up with a plan to cut the number of spots for students learning English. The plan comes as then Superintendent Jean-Claude Brizard seeks to mainstream those students into regular schools, underscoring a debate in education about how to best educate children learning the language. But while Jackson started the semester strong, as the months push on he gets stuck while learning double-digit numbers and combining letters of the alphabet. Despite all of the resources a one-on-one aide, two specialists and the assistance of an English language teacher in his classroom Jackson's progress seems to come to a standstill, baffling the cadre of teachers assembled to help him develop. Jackson is also becoming increasingly aware of his vision problems, and that he cannot see like the other children.

Not all students can be placed in the same mold as they advance through school to graduation. The new program will add flexibility to scheduling and academic programs to help more of our community's teens reach the goal of graduation.
