Tapia named St. Leo chairman

SAINT LEO — Donald Tapia is the new chairman of the board of trustees for St. Leo University, a Catholic university located just northeast of Tampa, effective July 1, according to an official statement from the school.

Tapia earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. Leo’s Center for Online Learning in 2005, and his M.B.A. in 2007. In 2008, he sold his business, Essco Wholesale Electric Inc., for an undisclosed price; two years later, he donated $4 million to St. Leo University.

St. Leo’s Donald R. Tapia School of Business is currently under construction, and is slated to open this August.

St. Leo has more than 15,000 students in more than 40 academic programs. Its campus in Saint Leo is roughly 30 miles north of Tampa.

Saint Leo University is a private, Roman Catholic university located in Saint Leo, Florida.  The school was established in 1889 and has a little over 1,000 students pursuing college degrees on campus as well as more than 13,000 additional students pursuing degrees online or at one of the school’s extended campus locations.  Saint Leo University offers more than 40 undergraduate majors that students can choose from and also offers graduate degrees in business, education, criminal justice, and theology.

One of Saint Leo’s greatest assets and main attractions is its small class sizes.  All classes are taught by full time instructors.  The school doesn’t use any part time teaching assistants.  The average Saint Leo class size is 18 students.

St Leo University Online

Online learning at Saint Leo University is huge.  In fact, the school has more students who are studying online at any given time than they have studying on campus.  To accommodate all of these online students, the school offers a wide variety of online degree programs at the associate’s, bachelor’s, and  master’s degree levels.  In addition, several graduate level certificates are offered as well.

At the associate’s degree level online degrees are offered in business administration, criminal justice, and liberal arts.  At the bachelor’s degree level online degrees are offered in business (several areas of study), computer information systems, health care management, human resources management, international hospitality & tourism management, liberal studies, psychology , sociology, criminal justice, and homeland security.

At the master’s degree level online degrees are offered in business ( MBA with several areas of study available), criminal justice, critical incident management, instructional design, and social work.  Online graduate certificates are also available in accounting, criminal justice, health care management, information security management, instructional design, and marketing.

The degree programs offered through Saint Leo online are of a very high quality.  The program does have one negative aspect to it though…. and it’s a big one.  Saint Leo online has contracted with the University Alliance to market its online degree programs.  The University Alliance is a company that is owned by Bisk Education.  The company earns revenue by signing up new students to degree programs with various schools in addition to selling books and materials to students.
