Bringing a smile to animal lover in hospice

Vivian, one of two giraffes at the Peoria Zoo, takes a lettuce leaf from Elizabeth Sneed during a trip Friday to fulfill a wish for the 96-year-old Rosewod Care Center resident. Passages Hospice case manager Anita Lostutter, right, brought Sneed, an avid Animal Planet television program viewer, after arranging for Sneed to have the opportunity to feed the giraffe.

At age 96, Elizabeth Sneed doesn't have the need or the desire to get out much from her home in the Rosewood Care Center in Peoria.

On Friday morning, however, the retired schoolteacher from Peoria rode a CityLift bus to the Peoria Zoo where she was named an honorary zookeeper for the day, stared down a four-ton white rhinoceros from five feet away, and offered lettuce to Vivian, the zoo's 2-year-old female giraffe, in her indoor enclosure.

Vivian unfurled her 18-inch black tongue through the chain-link fencing and accepted the offer.

"She loves animals and is an avid 'Animal Planet' (cable channel) watcher," said Anita Lostutter, Sneed's case worker with Passages Hospice services. "We got to talking about something Elizabeth might want to do and came up with bringing her to feed the giraffes. She's been very excited to come."

The visit to the behind-the-scenes areas of the Peoria Zoo was paid for and arranged by the Passages Hospice Dream Foundation, a charitable organization that gives hospice patients the opportunity to live out a dream.

"It's so rewarding when it comes together like this," said Kansas Swain, the director of Foundation Services for Passages, who came to Peoria from Kankakee for the Friday morning outing.

Along with feeding Vivian, Sneed was taken in her wheelchair to visit up close with a white rhinoceros in its indoor enclosure and then around the boardwalk in the Africa! exhibit. She was given a tall stuffed giraffe and a Peoria Zoo polo shirt, which she wore. The zoo's curator of education, Jill Roderick, filled the tour with interesting facts and figures about the animals and how they lived.

"We do lots of tours, but never one quite like this before," Roderick said. "This one is pretty special."

It was difficult to be certain whether the visit was a pleasurable experience for Sneed - she's frail, her expression changed little, she can't hear well, and she spoke few words. At a point before she had seen the giraffes, she asked if it was time to go back home.
