Holiday Lake Turnout Less than Expected
Of course this year, the high water is nothing like last year following the May floods, and Thurman says she can tell people are getting back on the water, if only a few."With the flooding, people can't swim," she said. "You can't go the beach."
Another driving factor behind people staying home this year: gas prices.
AAA reports gas prices across the nation have actually gone down. Right now the price for a gallon of regular costs $3.81.
"Gas prices have gone down a little bit, so it's been nice," said Amy Perry of Hopkinsville.
Even though the average price in South Central Kentucky is in the 3-50 range, Perry says she can't believe this is the price on a holiday weekend.
"Very surprised gas prices are down. It's 10 cents cheaper here than in Hopkinsville, Perry said."
She says no matter the gas prices or the high water, some people will hit the lake, no matter what.
"Everybody wants to get out on the holiday, so we came on," she said.
State Resort Park officials say they expect Sunday to be the busiest day over the holiday weekend.
Meantime, fewer people on the lake means less business for gas stations and shops in the area. Gary Morrison with Ranger Bob's Bait & Tackle says he wasn't expecting a boom in business, but he's happy with what he's seen so far.
"We prepared for better than a normal weekend, but not as heavy as a normal Memorial weekend, and we're doing fine," Morrison said.
Morrison says business this year is by far better than last year at this time.
Barren River Lake Fishing Report - News
The Barren River Rod and Gun Club meets tonight at 7 pm at the clubhouse. Following the potluck dinner, the program will be given by Wayne Taminga, wildlife biologist with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources.

Fishing overall has been slow. Largemouth activity best on main lake and secondary points at night or early and late in the day. Crankbaits, Carolina, Texas & shakey-head worm rigs have been baits of choice. Some shallow activity available using topwaters and smaller cranks as some fish are up chasing small shad on flats in the creeks and coves.
