Goddesslike Venus dazzles Wimbledon in white dress

WIMBLEDON, England (AP) — Dressed much like the goddess with whom she shares a name, Venus Williams is quite the fashion plate at Wimbledon.

The five-time champion is wearing a white romper — an all-in-one outfit with shorts and cutout sleeves and a big triangle cut out the back. The playsuit has a "V'' neckline and is adorned with a gold belt and zipper in the front.

Williams says it's a jumper, and "jumpers are very 'now,' as is lace." She also likes the draping shoulders, which she calls "in the moment." She says: "It's just kind of like a trendy dress. It's fun."

Williams routed Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan 6-3, 6-1 Monday to reach the second round.

(Reuters) – Venus Williams’s first-round win at Wimbledon on Monday was a small but important step in American women’s tennis re-establishing itself after injuries to the five-times champion and sister Serena had exposed an alarming lack of depth.

Very few of the fans dodging the south London rain will have heard of any of the other American women in the draw for the grasscourt grand slam despite the nation’s history of success with Billie Jean King and Chris Evert among the greats.

Venus, out for five months with an abdominal problem, hammered Akgul Amanmuradova 6-3 6-1 with little sign of nerves but the same cannot be said for her compatriots lingering well down the world rankings.

“At this point I don’t think there’s as many people in general in U.S. tennis as we’re used to seeing. So I think that’s a priority (to address), especially in terms of the U.S., which is so used to having five or six people in the top 10 on each side,” Venus told a news conference.

So few and far between have Venus Williams’s appearances been on the women’s tour in the past year that when she was late for the start of her first-round match on Monday, some of the crowd on Court Two might have assumed she was not coming at all. In the end, the five-times champion arrived about 10 minutes after the scheduled start, just in time to avoid the possibility of being defaulted, but once play began it was almost as if she had never been away.

The 31-year-old’s 6-3, 6-1 victory over Akgul Amanmuradova of Uzbekistan was remarkable only for her dress which she later described as “a jumper” but which looked more like a cut-down toga. “Jumpers are very now, as is lace,” Williams said. “The shoulders have a lot of draping, which is also in [at] the moment. It’s just kind of a trendy dress. It’s fun. I’m really into zippers, so it has a focal point of a zipper in the front. It’s just fun.
