If there is one thing better than lapping up the sun in Britain, it is the smug satisfaction in knowing we have left our Mediterranean neighbours in the shade.
The UK’s hot weather and clear skies are set to continue today and tomorrow, with temperatures in the West of England and Wales reaching a blazing 26c (79f).
But Mediterranean holiday destinations including Tenerife, Barcelona and the Cote d’Azur in France are set to suffer heavy rain, thunderstorms and cooler temperatures.
The popular Egyptian tourist destination of Sharm el Sheikh, the resort frequented by scuba divers, will also see thundery showers.
It will be hit throughout the weekend with temperatures lower than ours.
Weather experts confirmed that the reversal in fortunes – particularly on the Continent – is no coincidence.
Met Office forecaster Helen Chivers said: ‘When there is high pressure in one place, the low pressure weather system tends to go elsewhere.
‘Good weather over Britain at this time of year can bring thundery rain to most of the Med.
‘This weekend is a continuation of what we have seen through a lot of spring.
'It will be very dry and generally warm.
'Normally when this happens it is mostly to the east of the UK.
'But at the
moment the system has drifted further over to be centred over the whole
of the country.
'In fact the West will get the best sun.’
