5 charged with dealing in stolen goods after Daytona theft-ring investigation

DAYTONA BEACH -- Police busted a million-dollar theft ring with the help of a confidential informant and arrested operators of two Daytona Beach stores buying the stolen merchandise, according to reports.

MD Tarrick Hasan, 29, Abilash Patel, 52, and Sharma Himagini, 26, all of Daytona Beach, who ran the Sunoco convenience store at 848 N. Beach St., were arrested. They were each charged with three counts of handling stolen goods, police said.

Hasan, Patel and Himagini are out of the Volusia County Branch Jail, each on $30,000 bail, a booking officer said.

Also arrested in the investigation that took several months are Margaret Suleiman, 42, and Suleiman K. Suleiman, 44, both of Ormond Beach. The husband and wife own the A1A Market and Deli at 645 N. Atlantic Ave. and were each charged with four counts of dealing in stolen goods.

The Suleimans left jail after each posted $40,000 bail, a booking officer said.

The investigation started after "one of the guys" involved in the theft ring was arrested by police, said police spokesman Jimmie Flynt.

"He started telling investigators what was going on," Flynt said.

The investigation by Daytona Beach police detectives and loss prevention officers from CVS, Walgreens and Publix determined that most of the merchandise was purchased very cheap and then sold at regular consumer prices, reports said.

The informant and others were involved in the group, which had stolen more than $1.5 million in merchandise throughout Central Florida. Some of the items came from CVS, Walgreens and Publix, Flynt said.

The stolen goods included hygiene products such as condoms, toothpaste, razors, antacids, vitamins and over-the-counter pain relievers. The goods also included cigarettes, investigators said.

In one case the informant went to the Suleimans' store on North Atlantic Avenue carrying a backpack stuffed with goods, including Pepto Bismol, that police supplied valued at $750. The Suleimans paid the informant $55. Later, a loss-prevention officer went to the store and purchased the Pepto Bismol priced at $7.99, reports state.

The informant also entered the convenience store on North Beach selling cartons of cigarette. The cartons that cost $55 each were bought at $10 each, police said.

In both instances, the informant told the store operators the merchandise had been stolen from Walgreens, reports show.

Police recovered the marked items when they executed search warrants at the stores, reports said.

Daytona Drive Home Invasion Guilty Plea | WAVY.com | Virginia Beach

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A third man accused of committing a deadly home invasion in 2008 pleaded guilty Tuesday.

Kwame Uzzle is scheduled to be sentenced on September 12, 2011.

Uzzle, Edward Powell and Deandre Gordon were all charged in connection with the murder of 30-year-old Nathan Lynch. Shortly after midnight on December 15, 2008 Lynch was found lying in the front yard of a home in the 3300 block of Daytona Drive in Virginia Beach. Police said he was pronounced dead at the scene.

All three suspects have pleaded guilty to Second Degree Murder, Armed Burglary and Conspiracy.

Had the case gone to trial, the Commonwealth's Attorney's Office said evidence would have proven that the trio planned to break into the victim's home in the Plaza Apartment Townhomes. They kicked in the back door and were surprised to find Lynch's mother at home. At gunpoint, they forced her to go from room to room in search of money or drugs. Nathan Lynch returned home during the crime and struggled with Gordon. Powell then appeared and shot Lynch in the chest, killing him.

Evidence collected at the scene matched Gordon's DNA.

Powell, only 16 years old at the time, later confessed to his involvement in the burglary.
