Police doing curfew checks

BRADENTON -- Since June 1, Bradenton detectives and patrol officers have been conducting nightly curfew checks, called Operation Sandman, at the homes of seven juvenile offenders who are on conditional release that requires them to be home at night.

During that time, the Bradenton Police Department has found five juveniles in violation of their court-conditioned curfews as a result of Operation Sandman.

Operation Sandman was designed by the Bradenton Police Department in partnership with the Manatee County Office of Juvenile Probation to ensure juveniles are abiding by the conditions of their release, according to Deputy Chief J.J. Lewis of the Bradenton Police Department.

It’s also intended to reduce recidivism, a media release said, and to ensure a safe environment for others in the community. “Our detectives realized they were arresting some of the same juveniles repeatedly and they were being arrested while on conditioned release,” said Lewis.

Lt. John Affolter of the Bradenton Police Department said he is hopeful that the operation will be successful.

Since the operation began there has been a 5 percent decrease in burglaries, 2.5 percent decrease in thefts and 14 percent decrease in vehicle thefts in Bradenton, compared with the same period last year.
