Topica touts toenail treatment test results
Topica Pharmaceuticals Inc. in Palo Alto said an early stage test of a potential toenail fungus treatment was successful.
This test was a Phase I/IIa clinical trial involving 24 people, who each had their toenails treated with a solution of luliconazole once a day for 29 days. Topica said the results suggested “little risk for safety concerns or drug-drug interactions.”
Patients had ECG monitoring, which regulators require, and no cardiac effects were found. Such early phase tests are primarily about how safe and tolerable a drug is, though they also look at how well it works.
Topica plans a Phase II test of about 240 people this year.
Luliconazole has already been approved in Japan in a milder formulation -- 1 percent in a cream or solution, versus the 10 percent strength in this trial -- as a treatment for athlete’s foot type fungus infection of the skin. About 8 million people have used the treatment there, Topica said.
