Delhi schools look to fill backfields

Delhi, Delhi Charter and Oak Grove will all leave Cedar Creek, Ouachita Christian and St. Frederick this year to head back to their previous district opponents: Mangham and Tensas.
The new District 3-1A is a reunion of the old 4-1A, which Delhi Charter won in 2007 and Delhi Charter, Mangham and Oak Grove tied atop of in 2008.
Cedar Creek, OCS and St. Frederick will remain in 2-1A, where Arcadia and Grambling will rejoin them after Cedar Creek and OCS took the 2007 and 2008 district titles, respectively.

Familiar foes in Delhi and Delhi Charter's "new" district won't be enough to leave the teams without some big questions to answer.

And there's little surprise most of the interrogatives are in the backfield following the departures of district co-offensive MVP running back Riccie Gray from Delhi Charter and second-team all-distict quarterback Desmond McDowell and second-team all-district running back Devante Jackson from Delhi.

"We've got a good bit of things in place right now because of the kids we've got coming back, but we've got a question mark at running back, losing Riccie Gray," Delhi Charter coach Brett Raley said. "And maybe a few question marks in our defensive backfield. But other than that, offensively we just lost two receivers and a running back, and we've got two young receivers we think can step right in."

Sophomores T.J. Bell and Demmarius Brass will be the new pass catchers, but the Gators haven't had much of a chance yet to work on the tall task of replacing Gray, who rushed for 1,853 yards and 18 touchdowns on 227 carries en route to all-state honors.

Delhi Charter opted against spring practice because of the early end to the school year and early beginning to

summer workouts.

"Our school got out May 6, and you couldn't start spring practice until May 9, and we started our summer program (Monday)," Raley said. "I didn't see any point in bringing the kids back up there, and then they get no summer vacation at all. Sometimes you get a case of burnout."

Down the street, Delhi coach Maurice Pollard has a bit more certainty about his own running back situation.

LaQuinton Washington, who earned first-team all-district recognition at linebacker in 2010, will likely be the most featured back, Pollard said.
