Big Lots Recalls Futon Bunk Beds After Child's Death

Aren't there inspectors to oversee that the products made for sale are indeed reputable and stable for human use, or is it that cheap materials and lack of experience for less pay are utmost important rather than paying for quality materials and workmanship? At this point to save a dollar, the producer of these products would hope that no one is killed or injured from use of their product, rather than use quality assurance and workmanship to produce quality and viable equipment for consumer use and well being! They deserve to be sued due to shoddy and cheap producing of products not fit for human use! Disgusting to cut corners and for the manufacturer to save a buck, it's at the expense of the lives of consumers!

This is a disaster for the family and the only thing that's "down the tubes" about this country is the shocking lack of compassion shown by Internet brave-guys always looking to blame parents for a horror that befalls their child. Why are people so quick to blame the parents? Does it make them feel smug and more comfortable to distance themselves from these tragedies by blaming the parents for an error? It's insane to think parents would monitor their children's every move, every minute of the day and night. We all have to assume there's a reasonable level of safety in our everyday household items.

St. Louis parents who purchased a metal bunk bed from discount retailer Big Lots in 2009 and 2010 should take note of the latest announcement from the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency and Big Lots recently announced a recall of metal futon bunk beds after a three-year-old boy became entrapped in the bed, suffocated and died.

The product is a metal futon bunk bed with space for a twin ladder on the top bunk and a convertible futon on the lower bunk. According to the release, the dangerous product is being recalled because of its design, which creates potential safety hazards for children.

When the futon is lowered to the flat position for use as a bed, children who are behind the futon or near the bed's ladder can become stuck in the frame. In addition, there is insufficient space between the bottom rung of the ladder and the futon mattress, which can cause a child's head to become stuck in the metal frame.

The bunk beds affected by the recall were sold at Big Lots stores across the country between January 2009 and April 2010. Consumers who own products covered by the recall can contact the company for a repair kit, which includes a new ladder and various other parts that can be installed in order to reduce the risk of suffocation to children.

In March of 2010, the young boy was taken to the hospital after his head became stuck in the futon's medal frame. At the hospital, he passed away, with compression asphyxiation as the cause of death.
