HTC Merge (US Cellular)
The HTC Merge adds some real heft to U.S. Cellular's lineup, and not just because it's a weighty device. It's a real world phone that works on CDMA networks in the U.S. and accepts prepaid SIM cards overseas. It's essentially a clone of the HTC EVO Shift 4G ($199, 4 stars) over on Sprint, except with GSM intead of WiMAX and with a slightly smoother and more polished-looking design. Design, Call Quality, and Apps
The Merge measures 4.8 by 2.4 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a surprisingly heavy 7 ounces. It's been a long time since we've seen a phone that heavy. It's built better than Sprint's HTC EVO Shift 4G, with a pleasing mix of glass, plastic, soft touch accents, and a brushed aluminum back cover that lends the device a feeling of solidity and quality. The 3.8-inch, 480-by-800-pixel display looks sharp and bright, and touch response is exactly as it should be. The slider mechanism feels solid. The four-row QWERTY keyboard features flat, oval keys that feel a bit cheap but are easy to type on. They're mostly silent and brightly backlit.
The Merge is a true world phone, as it supports dual-band EV-DO Rev A (850/1900 MHz), quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz), and 2100Mhz HSDPA for 3G speeds on foreign networks. It also has 802.11b/g Wi-Fi, which worked fine on my WPA2-encrypted network. Voice quality was good, but not great. Callers sounded loud and punchy in the earpiece, and my own voice came through relatively clear through the microphone. But some spotty reception issues meant that a few calls were broken up (although none dropped). Calls sounded clear through an Aliph Jawbone Icon Bluetooth headset ($99, 4 stars), and voice dialing worked fine over Bluetooth without training. The speakerphone sounded muddy and didn't go loud enough to overcome moderate background noise. Battery life was excellent at 7 hours and 55 minutes of talk time.
If you want to take the Merge abroad, you're going to have to roll your own service plan. Many people would consider that a plus: arranging for your own SIM card is almost always much cheaper than paying roaming rates. If you don't want to struggle with a foreign cell-phone shop, consider an international SIM like the Truphone Tru SIM ($30, 3 stars).
Underneath the hood, there's an 800MHz Qualcomm MSM7630 processor, which felt fast enough when I was using it. The Merge runs Android 2.2 (Froyo); there's no word yet on a release date for an Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upgrade. HTC's Sense UI layer is in full effect, with a compliment of enhanced widgets and apps for everyday tasks. As a proper Android phone, the Merge syncs email, calendar, and contacts with Microsoft Exchange and Outlook accounts—notable here given the Merge's business focus—and also has a solid WebKit browser with Flash support. The Merge also works with over 150,000 third-party apps available through Android Market.
