New enterprise plan at UCL aims for 500 new companies
University College London is launching a five-year campaign to strengthen the role of business in college.
The ambitious goals include the income of the double licensing, sponsored research and other key business activities, the creation of 500 new companies on campus and off campus, offering courses in entrepreneurship to all students and training for staff and providing a sabbatical for academics involved in innovation.
"To be enterprising and have a broad portfolio of business activities is at the heart of the fundamental mission of a university. And a core mission of the university is a social good, through education, scholarships and relations with the outside world, "Steve Caddick, professor of chemistry and UCL Vice-President (Corporate) said Science | Business .
There is clearly a pragmatic component to this too. UCL believes it has a responsibility to help the United Kingdom and the British economy. Universities have always been widely regarded as essential to the vitality of an economy, but "sometimes not as widely appreciated," said Caddick."They are now seen as engines of growth, but I think we should also be seen as a springboard for growth."
With almost all students who wish to find gainful employment at the end of their course, Caddick believes the corporate agenda is important for employability - including making informed career decisions and potentially for business creation . UCL will also consider financial assistance to students seeking to create new businesses.
"Not all 24,000 students at UCL will be interested in this subject. But it will help inform the range of possibilities available to them when they leave the university, and potentially during their time as university students, "said Caddick.
The new plan
UCL has for the past five years been gradually increase its business support and commitment of the industry and is widely recognized as one of the best universities in the United Kingdom for these activities. In the academic year 2009/10, it generated more than £ 10 million in research sponsorship of British Industry.Moving technology company UCL companies earned more than £ 4 million licensing revenues. The university co-financed more than 100 doctoral fellowships with industry, and currently has 34 active spin-out companies based on intellectual property and UCL in which the University holds shares. UCL also has an excellent record of supporting the student companies.
