Sigma Plastics Group to Install 5-Layer VAREX Blown Film Line from Windmoeller ...

The high-output, 5-layer VAREX line is being added to accommodate growth at the plant. The line has a working width of 87" and is equipped with a stacked MULTICOOL D air ring and FILMATIC TX dual turret winder. This is FlexSol's fourth VAREX from W&H at the Nashville plant. The line will produce 5-layer co-extruded film primarily for food packaging with production scheduled to begin in Q4 2011. ISO Poly Films in Gray Court, SC added a 7-layer line with a 87" working width, as well as two 3- layer lines with working widths of 110" and 126" and one 63" 5-layer line. Clinton, MS-based McNeely Plastics boosted its production with a 71" 3-layer line. The companies became members of the Sigma Plastics Group in February 2009 and January 2010 respectively. What is plastic bags, pop bottles, cellophane wrappers, and plastic forks all have in common. For one, you probably use these products every day (and then discard). What we learn now is that an alarming amount of plastic found its way eventually into the oceans - in fact, millions of tons of plastic from around the world.The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) estimates that on average 46,000 pieces of floating plastic can be found per square mile of ocean worldwide. The main sources of ocean waste discharges include land near rivers or coasts, industrial outfalls, untreated sewage and stormwater, legal and illegal dumping at sea from ships and oil rigs and gas, and abandoned , lost or discarded fishing gear.

That's a lot of plastic! Now consider this: the ocean and circular currents of air, called vortices, floating debris disk to the center of the oceans, where water and wind is still.Here the debris can accumulate over many years and parts of the layer of plastic can be several feet thick! In their natural state, as a quiet area is considered a vortex and are important reasons for breadcrumbs and food for some fish, like eels in the Sargasso Sea. Now many of these areas are called "Garbage Patches "or" Eddies Trash ".

In September, UNEP, in cooperation with Ocean Conservancy, issued a detailed report on marine litter: A Global Challenge, which sets the global problem of marine litter, reviews and analysis of regional assessments and action plans, and made several recommendations to countries to meet the global challenge. The report can be downloaded free from www. New.unep.org UNEP / regionalseas / marinelitter.

The report recommends that regional action plans and national will be developed to create and enforce laws for waste management, develop institutional mechanisms and public-private partnership of government, and to raise public awareness and education. The report also recommends that the receipt of ports and inspection facilities to be improved. It is also effective measures to stop the flow of garbage into our oceans and start cleaning.

At the World Oceans Day 2009, the Assistant Secretary General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner called for a global ban on "unnecessary plastic thin film," such as those used for single-use bags of plastic grocery and plastic shrink wrapping around many everyday products.
