Nissan's electric car rolls into Pocono dealership; one of first on East coast
WANT ONE?Nissan's Leaf
Price: Up to $37,250 but add another $10,000 to the price due to scarcity.
Getting there: Will go anywhere from 62 to 138 miles on a single charge, depending on your driving habits.
Fill 'er up: Takes 10 hours to fully charge it on a 120-volt home outlet, four hours on a 220-volt outlet.
Sales so far: About 4,000 sold nationally so far. The most popular trade-in? The hybrid Toyota Prius.
Coming soon: Look for the Leaf to be widely available in Northeast Pennsylvania early next year.
"We're the first dealer in the Northeast region, if not of the whole East Coast, to show and test drive the car," dealership owner Jason Motts said.
Nissan says its new five-passenger compact vehicle is the first U.S. mass-market all-electric car.
The Chevy Volt, General Motors' electric model, will be out at the end of the year. It has a supplementary gasoline power source.
Nissan introduced the Leaf earlier this year on the West Coast and the vehicles are slowly rolling out eastward.
Philadelphia and New York should get some by the end of the year, but the cars aren't expected to be widely available in northeast Pennsylvania until 2012.
Motts snagged one Leaf from a West Coast dealer friend.
The Leaf's greatest feature is its economy — its electric fuel costs the gas-equivalent of less than 10 cents a gallon.
The Leaf gets between 62 and 138 miles on a single charge, compared to 40 miles for the Volt. However, a supplementary gasoline generator on the Volt will take it another 344 miles.
Nissan's fuel economy comes at a price, however. It is listed at $35,200 to $37,250, but scarcity has added a premium of more than $10,000 to the purchase price.
The Volt will retail for $40,280.
For now, the federal government offers a $7,500 tax credit for Leaf purchasers.
Motts wasn't sure of the immediate potential for the Leaf locally because it can only travel short distances between charges and he'll be selling it in an area with a heavy commuter base.
