Volunteer firefighters march to remember in Lake George

LAKE GEORGE -- Every time Kingsbury 1st Asst. Fire Chief Nelson "Butch" Chase passes the former Parkview Hotel, he remembers firefighter Paul MacMurray, who died in a 1994 fire that leveled the building.

Hundreds of volunteer firefighters marched in a dress parade Saturday along Route 9 in Lake George to recognize fallen firefighters, said Marilyn Schrader, first vice president of the Hudson Valley Volunteer Firemen's Association, which hosts the event.

One-hundred and twenty seven fire companies participated in the event, said the chairman of the convention steering committee, Tom Tracy, of South Glens Falls.

"We're all family," said Rob Bowen, an assistant fire chief with Kingsbury Volunteer Hose Company No. 1.

This year's convention started Wednesday and runs through Sunday. The association that runs the event covers 16 counties, from Essex to Westchester.

On Friday, the convention held a slightly smaller Mardi Gras parade that specifically focused on those who died during 9/11 as well as any other emergency responder who died that year.

Hundreds of spectators lined along the sidewalks and roadway Saturday.

Parent Bob Centorani, of Wappingers Falls near Poughkeepsie and a lifetime member of the New Hackensack Fire Company, was there with three generations of family members to watch his son, a member of the Chelsea Fire Company.

Mike Hongach sat in his wheelchair with a red Firemen's Home hat to see the parade. He visited Lake George from Hudson solely for the parade, which he had never attended previously, he said. A group of five residents from his retirement facility were there.

Marvin Gonyea, a Kingsbury firefighter and fire policeman, drove a 1927 Buffalo firetruck, which is just 10 years older than himself. He said in dress parades like this, he thinks about all the volunteers who sacrificed their lives for other people.

Vinny Galvin, president of the association, said his company recognizes a fallen member at every monthly meeting.

Parade onlooker Chris Nau said he's noticed the New York City Fire Department has been more receptive to volunteer firefighters since 9/11, when about three-quarters of the 11 or 12 who died in rescue efforts from his area, Rockland County, were volunteers.

As part of the convention, the assembly also voted on where to have the parade next year.

The South Glens Falls Volunteer Fire Company had decided on June 6 to make a pitch to the association's board, and made T-shirts four days later.
