Three men rescued by Coast Guard after boat capsizes near Port Orford
The U.S. Coast Guard says three men were rescued near Port Orford after their capsized boat left them stranded in the Pacific Ocean.
Rescuers were alerted after one of the trio called 9-1-1 at 7:11 a.m., on Saturday, claiming they were floating on top of the upside-down 30-foot boat 10 miles west of Port Orford.
U.S. Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Jason Reeder said on Sunday that a helicopter spotted the men at 8:10 a.m. He added that they were quickly found because they were able to track the signal emanating from the cell phone used to make the distress call.
The men, whose identities have not been released, were then recovered by motor lifeboat crews and transported to Gold Beach, where they were medically evaluated and released in good condition. They were the only ones on the boat, said Coast Guard officials on Sunday.
The cause of the capsizing is not yet known and the boat, Cosmic Charlie, was left on the scene by Coast Guard officials but will be recovered by friends of the rescued men.
