Heavy rain in Sioux Falls prompts street flooding

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) - Heavy rain that accompanied a noontime thunderstorm is causing some street flooding around Sioux Falls.

The Argus Leader newspaper reports that drivers are being stranded across town, and water is pushing up manhole covers.

A sinkhole was reported at Sixth and Leaders, and pavement was buckling at 16th and West.

Lightning from the storm also struck a transformer at 12th and Chicago.

Spurs Hall of Famer George Gervin remembered his former teammate and close friend Mike Mitchell after his recent death.

While appearing at a clinic at Washington High School in Sioux Falls, S.D., Gervin shared his memories of Mitchell with the Argus Leader newspaper.  

“I’ve had my time to mourn,” Gervin told the newspaper. “Just last year Mike and I were playing golf two or three times a week. To lose such a good guy at such a young age is a tragedy. Prayerfully, I think he’s gone to a better place, but we’re all going to miss him.”

Mitchell died Thursday after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was 55.

Tim Griffin has been a journalist for 29 years working at a variety of newspapers and websites, including more than 24 years at the San Antonio Express-News. He has covered all four Spurs NBA championship victories, along with 12 national championship football games and five Final Fours. Griffin presently serves as the national president of the Football Writers Association of America. He is married with one son.
